Google Universal Search And Marketing…

May 31st, 2007 · 4 Comments

Google Universal Search

The big “G” just started its new , and many marketers and webmasters think that it is the end of the static HTML webpages.

It is not the case. Internet marketers must always adapt themselves to the changes, and since Google is always chasing quality (… and money!), the serious marketers will stay.

What does it mean for you as a marketer?

If the word “Quality” is one of the most important words in your organization, you will always find a way to put your business in front of potential customers.

Instead of being afraid of these changes, you welcome them since your business will benfit as you are trying to improve.

I see a problem though…

I have an unanswered question, and I need your help to find the answer… Here it is: Should we improve our business (the Internet part) at each Google move? Is Google becoming our boss?

Wether it’s PPC or Search Engine Optimization, it’s hard to find a web master (blogger included) who study Google moves daily (or at least monthly).

Search Engine land wrote an excellent article on the subject, you can read it here:

With Google’s universal search, every time you conduct a search, Google checks across all of its search properties - web, image, video, news etc - and presents a single unified results page, that incorporates the most relevant content.

That needn’t be a problem. The skilled search engine marketer’s most important asset is understanding how search engines get various types of listings, then helping their clients enter the appropriate databases. Think beyond web page databases, and you’ll be prepared for the future. Read more…

For those who are just starting with SEO, they will find it a little bit difficult… Let me tell you a little secret:

In anything you do online (and offline), there are basics. Those basics are not going to disapear anytime soon. So learn the basics, and all the rest will follow.

A word about video…

Google bought Youtube last year, and as usual, they have a plan. Now, Google and youtube video will be included into the top 10 results.

It will be possible to watch a video directly from the SERP’s.

Can you still get a top 10 spot with a static HTML website?

Obviously, things are getting harder, but not impossible. You just need to use these video sites as a part of your marketing strategy: Youtube, Google Video, Metacafe and others.

Instead of fighting for the top 10 results, you will find yourself fighting for the 5 (or 6) spots left.

Also, you will need to optimize your website with videos, images and news items (again, blog and RSS are kings).

Now, video and images will become part of your SEO strategy. I must admit that I am not a video geek, so my best bet will be to outsource my “video production”.

An enhancement for Google users

Users will be able to find vertical results on their searches. They will find images, videos, news, on the first page of results.

I think that when users have a better experience browsing the net, their will be more comfortable, and willing to buy from professional and trustworthy websites. This should increase business for serious web masters.

What To Do Now to take advantage of Google Universal Search?

If you want to stay at the top, here is what you should do:

  • Start creating video to upload to Youtube, Google Video and others… And learn how to optimize your “video marketing” strategy.
  • Submit Press Releases with services like PRweb to get in Google News
  • Start adding images to your web pages and blog posts (I will find an image for this post), and optimize with alt and title tags. I read that it helps to add the widht and height attribute.
  • Write a book in your niche?

One friend of mine noticed that the searching is more difficult - she can’t find good results because of the images, blogs and news which appears in top. So she decided to use Yahoo instead. For a normal person (non IT professional) used with the regular searching, the new way of results displaying is very difficult. Annoying. People don’t want to click and choose more options if they don’t have to. So for them Google new look is not a desirable one.
How this will change the Google supremacy? Will the users switch to other search engines? What do you think?

    Interesting remark.

I thought that those non IT people would like to see all these features in the results (news, videos, books).

I think that it will be annoying for them at first, however, when people start get it, they will like it.

I may be wrong. Let’s see what’s next.

Google is not going to stop enhancing its operations to keep its tight grip on webmasters. The irony of it all is that we are begging Google to use our materials for free in the name of indexing.

If Google were paying for the materials they so jealously protect, it would have been understandable. However, webmasters who are serious in their business should keep abreast of the monster and make sure they do not collide.

    By the way:

    I Jackson,

    How are you doing?

I did receive your email and I also replied. I guess it ended up into your trash folder, or maybe worst, you never receive it.

I will upload a short video about this soon and send you an email.
